Attacked? Look for Captures Before Retreats

โ† All lessons

When one of your pieces gets attacked, the reflex is to pull it back to safety. But retreating is only one of the options, and often the worst one. Before you retreat, run the checklist: can the attacked piece CAPTURE something? Can it move somewhere creating a bigger threat? Can you defend it or counterattack instead?

An attacked piece that grabs material on its way out turns your opponent's threat into their loss. The mindset shift is small but worth real rating: being attacked isn't an order to run, it's a prompt to look at every forcing option first.
