Being hopelessly behind on material doesn't always mean losing. If your queen can check the enemy king forever, bouncing between two or three squares the king can never escape from, the game is a draw by repetition. Half a point rescued from a dead-lost position.
The ingredients: an exposed enemy king, your queen close enough to keep checking, and no way for the defender to block or trade the checks off. Whenever you're losing badly but still have your queen, stop looking for counterplay and start looking for an unbreakable checking loop.
