Punishing the Early Queen

โ† All lessons

Bringing the queen out on move two or three feels aggressive, but it usually backfires against calm play: every developing move that attacks the queen gains a tempo, and the queen ends up chased around the board while the other side builds a lead in development.

The key word is calm. Don't chase the queen with weakening pawn moves or lash out; just develop pieces toward the center, and make sure each one either defends what's attacked or gains time on the queen. The early queen punishes itself.
