What this covers
This policy explains what Rookie ("we," "us") collects when you use chesswithrookie.com, why, and what choices you have. Rookie is operated as an independent project; see the About page for contact details.
Information we collect
Chess.com and Lichess usernames. When you enter a username, Rookie fetches that account's public game history from Chess.com's or Lichess's public API. We don't need or ask for your password on either service.
Account information. If you sign in (to save a mistake deck, get a training plan, or use the coach), we use Supabase for authentication, which stores your email address and a unique account ID. Sign-in can happen via a magic link or via Google/GitHub OAuth, in which case we receive only the basic profile information those providers share (name, email, avatar).
Game and mistake data. Games you analyze, the moves Stockfish grades, and the recurring-mistake tags built from them are stored against your account so your deck persists between visits.
Coach conversations. If you use the AI Coach or generate a training plan, your messages and a summary of your recent mistakes are sent to OpenAI's API to generate a reply. OpenAI processes this data to return the response; see OpenAI's own privacy policy for how they handle it.
Local device storage. Some preferences (sound on/off, puzzle streak, lesson progress, puzzle difficulty) are stored only in your browser's local storage, never sent to our servers, and cleared if you clear your browser data.
Basic usage data. Like most websites, our hosting provider (Netlify) logs standard technical data (IP address, browser type, pages requested) for security and reliability. We do not currently run analytics or advertising cookies; if that changes, this policy and the consent banner described below will be updated first.
How we use your information
To run the actual features you use: fetching and analyzing your games, building your mistake deck, generating puzzles and training plans, and remembering your streak and preferences. We do not sell your data, and we do not share your Chess.com or Lichess username, game data, or coach conversations with any third party except the service providers named above, solely to provide the features you're using.
Cookies and advertising
Rookie does not currently show ads. If ad-supported placements are enabled in the future (through Google AdSense), a consent banner will appear for visitors in the EU/EEA and UK before any advertising or analytics cookie is set, offering "Accept," "Manage options," and "Refuse" equally prominently, and you'll be able to change your choice at any time. Google's own explanation of how it and its partners use cookies is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can also manage ad personalization directly at Google's Ad Settings.
Your rights
If you're in the EU/EEA or UK, GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, export, or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to object to how it's processed. To exercise any of these, email hello@chesswithrookie.com from the address associated with your account, and we'll respond within a reasonable time. Deleting your account removes your stored game data, deck, and coach history from our database; data already sent to OpenAI as part of a past conversation is retained or deleted according to OpenAI's own policy, not ours.
Data retention
We keep account data for as long as your account is active. If you stop using Rookie, your data simply sits unused; email us if you'd like it deleted sooner.
Children's privacy
Rookie is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Rookie after a change means you accept the updated policy.
